About Us

 

The Department has been in existence since the inception of the Institute in 1960. Stalwarts like Dr Sujit Mohan Chanda, Dr Hirendranath Roy, Mr Arun Kumar Dutta, Dr Debashish Roychowdhury, Dr Kamala Banerjee, Dr Baidyanath Chakrabarti, Dr Partha Pratim Sengupta graced this Department as illustrious Professors. The Department at present has seven faculty members. They are actively engaged in teaching, research, and administration, specializing in various genres of English, Economics, Sociology, and Social Work. It runs PhD program in different disciplines and one PG program in Social Work, besides functioning as a supporting Department in UG programs, offering two core courses and as many as nine open elective courses. The Department regularly organizes academic activities like conferences, seminars, academic talks by eminent persons, GIAN programs, faculty development programs, short-term courses, and workshops, thereby sustaining and whetting the intellectual appetite of the academic community. The Research Scholars of the Department are also dedicated to the wholesome development of the Department, contributing their best to the formation of the academic and cultural identity of the Department.

  1. To achieve excellence in imparting communication skill and to emerge as a centre of excellence in language studies.
  2. To instil a sense of social awareness and social responsibility by giving exposure to social sciences.
  3. To enhance decision-making power of budding techno-managers by imparting knowledge of Economics, Management, Social Work, and Literature.
