The Department of Biotechnology, NIT Durgapur was established in 2005 with the B. Tech Biotechnology Program. The M.Tech program was subsequently introduced in 2009. In the year 2020, the department introduced a MSc in Life Sciences program .
The department consists of 17 faculties with diverse research backgrounds, engaged in teaching and research in applied biological sciences and biomedical engineering. Faculty members are actively involved in projects, publishing high quality research articles, patents and have established collaborations with various national and international laboratories. The department frequently receives grants from various central funding agencies such as DST, DBT, CSIR to support research activities. It is equipped with extensive research facilities and infrastructure to develop cutting-edge technology through interdisciplinary research, training, and technical innovation.
From past few years, the department has steadily emerged as a leader in providing excellent education at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels with strong emphasis on modern biotechnology skills and on extensive laboratory training. The department also hosts international students.The curriculum and syllabi have been framed to meet the challenges of the growing demand of the Biotechnology sector in India. The department aims to provide a holistic education by means of innovative teaching, extracurricular activities and frequently organised seminars and workshops.

Some of the Industry students are placed in are Tata Consultancy, GreB, Capegemini, Infosys, Mphasis, Gyansetu, Wipro, GreyB, HSBC while students have opted for higher studies in some of the reputed Institutes like IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Lucknow, MDI Gurgaon, University of Queensland, Wisconsin Madison, University of South Florida etc.They routinely get selected for summer internships in the best academic institutes in India and abroad. They also get selected in prestigious programs such as the PMRF fellowship, Khorana Program, KVPY fellowship, Indian Academy of Science fellowship, to mention a few.
